Somewhere along the way, the world taught us to swap that fearless joy for rigid perfectionism. But your Heavenly Father still looks at your honest scribbles with unbounded delight.

~ how this all began ~
God turned my mess into a message
A few years ago I hit a really overwhelming season. My dad was dying. My husband wasn’t well. Someone really close to me was going through a hard time. And I was trying to keep my private practice going as a speech therapist, commuting, and looking after some really complex cases.
And I just couldn’t do it anymore.
I sat in my spare bedroom and cried for 3 hours. My husband didn’t understand what was going on. Honestly, neither did I.
Then I sensed God say, “Paint a bruise.”
It didn’t make any sense. All I had was a child’s paint palette, a rubbish brush and the notebook I was praying in. So I used pink and grey and purple and some water. It went right through the page. It looked a complete mess.
I said, “God, that’s a mess.”
And He said, “I’m going to turn your mess into a message.”
I just had this sense that God was going to use this pain for a reason. And that’s where all of this began.

Giving women a voice with God

For 34 years I was a speech and language therapist. And even now, I just can’t bear people not having a voice.
If someone couldn’t speak, or needed another way to communicate, I was the person who would create that for them. Pictures, symbols, whatever it took.
Everyone deserves to be heard.
And then I found myself struggling to pray. I found it really hard to read my Bible and feel connected to God. The words just weren’t coming.
But when I sat with a pencil and wrote my prayers and my feelings, and doodled along the way, something changed. I sensed God speaking to me more. The Bible came alive for me. It felt really personal.
So now I feel God is using me in the same way. I’m still helping people find their voice, but this time it’s Christian women finding a way to talk to Him. Whether it’s doodling, sketching, collage or watercolour, it doesn’t matter.
It’s not about perfection and it’s not about performance. It’s about being present with God and enjoying every moment, even if it looks like a scribble on the page.
Joy
Doodling brings back the simple joy of making something just because you can. No rules, no pressure to get it right. Just playful marks, a curious heart, and the freedom to enjoy being creative with God.
Not Perfection
This isn't about making perfect art. Your wonky lines, messy doodles and unfinished pages are welcome here. You don't need artistic talent to meet with God through creativity. You just need to begin.
Just Presence
Pick up a pencil, take a breath, and let yourself slow down. As your hands make little marks on the page, you can turn your attention towards God. There's nothing to prove and nowhere else you need to be. Just you, your creativity, and time in His presence.

Art journaling with Jesus isn't about creating a masterpiece. It's about making space for a conversation with God, right there at your kitchen table. You don't have to impress anyone, and there's no art judge waiting to criticise your wonky lines or messy pages. You can simply pick up a pencil, take a breath, and spend time with the One who spoke the galaxies into being and lovingly formed you with His own hands.

At sixteen, I failed my school art exam. My teacher wrote that I had “no natural artistic instinct.” I believed those words for decades and kept my sketchbook closed.
Then God led me back to creativity through prayer and coloured pencils. I discovered He wasn't asking me to create beautiful art. He was inviting me to spend time with Him.
You don't have to be an artist to meet with God through creativity. You just have to begin.

Step 1: Prepare (2 Mins)
Open to a fresh blank page. Light a candle, take three deep belly breaths, and consciously surrender performance at Jesus' feet.
Step 2: Ask (3 Mins)
Whisper a single question: 'Father, what truth do You want my soul to hold today?' Write down whatever Scripture or single word bubbles up.
Step 3: Doodle (7 Mins)
Put graphite to grain. Sketch simple vines, leafy borders, or block lettering around your verse. No measuring, no erasing—just wandering lines in His love.
Step 4: Reflect (3 Mins)
Date your entry. Jot down one prayer gratitude sentence underneath, close your book with a sigh of relief, and walk into your day filled with peace.

What exactly is Christian art journaling?
Christian art journaling is a quiet, devotional rhythm where you linger in Scripture and prayer using simple lines, colors, and textures in a personal sketchbook. Rather than striving for gallery-ready art or technical perfection, it is an inviting way to slow down, listen intently to God's voice, and document your spiritual walk.
Do I need any previous drawing or artistic skill?
None whatsoever. If you can hold a pencil and trace a simple contour, you already have all the skill required. We deliberately practice gentle, permission-giving mark-making designed to quiet performance anxiety and make space for prayer.
Is this practice considered clinical art therapy?
No, this is a personal spiritual discipline and creative devotion, not clinical psychotherapy or medical mental health treatment. While reflective journaling is soothing and restorative, our offerings are designed specifically for Scripture meditation, worship, and prayer.
What basic supplies do I need before getting started?
You only need a simple mixed-media sketchbook, a standard pencil, an eraser, and whatever gentle color mediums you already have at home—such as colored pencils, water-soluble crayons, or an inexpensive watercolor pan. There is no need for costly art supplies.
What is the difference between The Collective and The Sanctuary?
